Hey everyone!
I've just left the Queer Families talk, and I must say, it was incredible. Chuck Erickson, Teege Mettille, and Nicole Buenzli from Admissions were on the panel, along with Teege's partner David. Professors Ben Rinehart and Nancy Wall (of art and biology respectively) spoke as well, as did Kathy Flores, the Diversity Coordinator for the City of Appleton.
The evening in general was great - the speakers told engaging and interesting stories of how their "Queer Family" functions (and showed us very cute pictures of their kids along the way!) Each spoke about how they've gone about raising their family: how it got started, how they've waded through the muddy legal waters, how they've handled the reactions of others, and what some of the highs and lows of queer parenting are. Everyone emphasized that families come in all shapes and sizes, something that every child is ready and willing to accept if it is presented to them positively. Tonight's speakers opened my eyes to the many ways that families form, some of which were completely new to me, and all of which are equally wonderful.
All of the panelists have "opened their doors" to us, so to speak, and are happy to talk to anyone with further questions. Thanks to everyone who spoke, and to GLOW members Deborah Levinson, Jared Gebel, and Val Neff for organizing the event!

Queer Families Talk
Hey there Glowsters!
Just a quick reminder that the Queer Families Talk is tomorrow night! Lawrence professors and staff will be talking about raising kids in same-sex relationships, and it's bound to be really interesting and fun! Plus, rumor has it cute kids come. Win/win, right? It's from 7:30-8:30 in the Wriston Auditorium. This event will be replacing our meeting, so there will be no regularly-scheduled GLOW tomorrow night. We are on for the following Monday at 9:15 in the GLOW House!
Hope to see you all there!

Welcome Glowme!
Get it? Glow + Home = Glowme? The breathtaking hilarity of the former comment should alert you to the fact that the rest of this blog will be rather silly... props if you keep reading.
So lets get started, shall we? First off - what actually IS GLOW? GLOW, which stands for Gay, Lesbian, or Whatever is "a community of students, allied with faculty and staff, who identify as or who support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students on the Lawrence University campus. We are a visible and supportive community, an outlet for social interaction, and an educational resource for the Lawrence University campus. Our mission is to encourage acceptance of, diversity among, and respect for all members of the Lawrence University student body, regardless of sexual orientation or gender" (thank you, GLOW homepage, for the well-worded description!) One thing I'd like to add is that GLOW is not solely for the LGBT part of the Queer Community - we welcome everyone - lesbian, bi, gay, transgender, asexual, pansexual, polyamorous, allies, etc. Long story short, you should come hang out with us!
This term, GLOW meets on Monday nights, though that is subject to change to a time that better suits everyone's busy schedules. Lawrentians are generally quite busy, and coming to GLOW gives us all a nice break to sit back, talk about issues pertinent to our community, and support each other. GLOW also does volunteer work (through Lawrence's Volunteer Center, with Harmony Cafe, and on our own), hosts fun events/parties that are open to the entire campus, and has a house which is a designated safe space for any and all students.
Basically, GLOW is the place to be. Check back in frequently for updates from GLOW-flakes about various on and off campus opportunities (especially coverage of The Big Gay Conference!)
